“Roof for Humanity builds community spaces in Refugee camps with local people”
The work I did with RfH made me happy, gave meaning to the days, and brought back my dignity, Hellen, construction-team member Kalobeyei settlement Kenya.
In Kalobeyei Refugee settlement, we built the first Klabu sportclubhouse together with local Turkana people, refugees and local builders. A very divers team from different countries and backgrounds worked on the clubhouse under supervision of Roof for Humanity founder, Narda. Together they created a beautiful welcoming space where people gather, play games, competitions and do all kinds of sports around in the fields and playgrounds. My role as architect, super visor and community worker made the project very interesting and rich. Learning new technics of the local people, teaching new methods to the construction students of the refugee camp secondary school and working with unexperienced builders made it very varied and sometimes challenging.
The Klabu sportclub functions as a libraby and has many members (11.000) who enjoy sports in the Kalobeyei refugee settlement, having moments of ease and joy, to forget the difficulties of living in a refugee camp.
